    Description

Offered is an extremely scarce PAGLIACCI opera plate designed by Ludwig Bemelmans for Castleton China Co. in the early 1940s.  Very rare and almost impossible to find. Was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City in the 1940s as well as other institutions
From a press release in the 1940s "The show contains the work of 12 leading American artists, including John Marin, Amedeo Modigliani, Umberto Romano, Stuart Davis, Peggy Bacon, Salvador Dali, Thomas W. Nason, Marcel Vertes,  Ludwig Bemelmans,  The porcelain plates in the show have aroused considerable interest because of their value as examples of ceramic art".
Ludwig Bemelmans (April 27, 1898 - October 1, 1962) was an Austria-Hungary-born American writer, author and illustrator of children's books.   He is known best for the Madeline picture books
This plate features a design of a stage with seating.
Has an attached wall plate hanger.
No known damage. No chips, no cracks.
